Laboratorio Emme Di mosaici di Roberta Maioli

Emme Di mosaic

The studio Emme Di Mosaici opened in 2006, with the mission of preserving and increasing appreciation of the quality of the mosaic medium.  Here in the heart of Ravenna, known and valued for her splendid Byzantine mosaics, the studio continues this tradition, calling attention to this popular expression of Ravenna’s art.

The studio, while certainly a place where mosaics are made, considers itself an “open” space, welcoming those working in the field and visitors alike.

(The studio Emme Di is managed by Roberta Maioli. Having earned a diploma from the l’Istituto Statale d’Arte [State Institute of Art], she continued her studies at the Facoltà di Conservazione dei Beni Cultural [Department of Conservation of Cultural Heritage].)

cosa facciamo?

Besides the creation of copies and reproductions of ancient mosaics utilizing Roman and Byzantine techniques, Emme Di executes mosaics proposed by artists and designers. In addition the studio benefits from its collaboration with Marco De Luca.

Since its opening, the studio has initiated collateral activities such as meetings, exhibitions and lectures. In collaboration with the Associazione Culturale Ad-Arte [Cultural Association Ad-Arte] and the Autorità Portuale di Ravenna [Port Authority of Ravenna], Emme Di has developed a three year project related to the promotion of contemporary mosaic, consisting of six events with six artists. Past exhibitions have been: Verdiano Marzi, May 2007; Paolo Racagni, November 2007; Giuliano Babini, May 2009; and Luciana Notturni, November 2009. The intent behind this initiative is to present mosaic artists representative of a certain generation.

During the Primo Festival Internazionale del Mosaico [First International Mosaic Festival] the studio presented an exhibit entitled “TRE x TRE: two generations of mosaicists”, signalling the passing of the torch while guaranteeing the continuity of the tradition. Three masters, Ines Morigi Berti, Sergio Cicognani, and Giuseppe Ventura, represent the beginning of Ravenna’s contemporary expression, and three students that have, in turn, become masters, Giuliano Babini, Marco De Luca, and Paolo Racagni, represent continuity and yet also metamorphosis. The exhibit’s intent was to call attention to the recent history of Ravenna’s mosaics, or better yet, the ‘Ravenna school’.
